Our group chose to make our feature story about diversity at Olathe Northwest. Starting off, our group had to come up with multiple ideas for natural noise that we could use during our piece. This included things such as a school bell, pencils moving, or just students moving and talking around the school. We also storyboarded and thought of different clips we could use to visually add to our story. Then we assigned roles to each member of our team so we could all contribute to the final product in some way. After that, we chose who we wanted to interview for our video and then began writing questions for each interviewee. We also began laying out our ideas on to paper by creating a script.
Once we started filming, we interviewed the people we wanted so we had a better idea of how we wanted to structure our video. Then we recorded b-roll in various places around the school. However, we probably did not record enough b-roll, as we were kind of left grasping at straws to extend our video's length. During filming, we had a few problems with our cameras, and that put us behind schedule a little bit, which definitely ended up affecting our final product. Then we began the editing process, where we sequenced our clips and put our voiceover in the video. I didn't have a ton of time to do many extra editing processes apart from the basic necessities.
During this project, I was assigned the editor role, although I still helped with all of the other parts of the project such as filming and planning. I think I definitely learned more about different filming and editing techniques during this project. I think I did a fairly good job with the "five guarantees", with the exception of project management. Usually I view this as a strength of mine, but for this project, our entire team seemed to fall behind schedule. The main thing I learned during this project was the importance of having plenty of b-roll because if you don't have enough, it could kill your video. I approached this project fairly similar to the last one, with a few exceptions. For example, this time I really tried to work with the camera more, since I see that as one of my weaknesses. I do think this payed off some, because although I'm still not the greatest with cameras, I'm definitely better than I was before. Next time, I would've made it more of a priority to get that natural noise in our piece because it is a very important part of a successful feature piece. I will definitely remember the different types of leads that could help to introduce your topic. As a whole, this project was pretty stressful with the fairly short deadline, so in the future I will definitely focus on using my time wisely so we can get everything done that we need.
