For this project, we started off by creating a hypothetical product. Once we had done this, we had to create other aspects to help advertise this product. So, after we had decided our product, we started on the actual graphics that would help to sell it. The graphics we were required to make included a 3D representation of our product, two web banners, a commercial, a logo and other graphic design images, and a website. All of these served a slightly different purpose in our advertising, but they were all important, so we were determined to make them all very good. This project definitely had its ups and downs for our groups, so we had to improvise our ideas a little bit. For example, our group started off with our animations, which was very difficult since we hadn't created our logo quite yet. All of this, although difficult, really helped to improve my skills in these different areas and I definitely learned a lot throughout the making of this project. Our group worked very well to complete our own work on time, so then we could help our teammates later on if they needed it. This is what I believe made our team so successful; we were not afraid to share our ideas and help one another. We also received some good critiques from other groups so we could make our project even better. For example, other groups helped a lot with perfecting our pitch, along with giving other ideas for our website and other graphics. This helped these aspects look more appealing to our viewers so they would like our product even more. Finally, after about two months of working on this project with many ups and downs, our group was finally ready to pitch our product. I was extremely happy with how our project turned out, and I am very proud of our work.
Time in Class
For this project, we had to complete everything during class. This included our 3D and 2D animations, commercial, website, and graphic design aspects. So, this was a very big project that required a lot of work from all of us. Since we didn't always work on the same parts of the project as our other group members, if one person got done early, they did a good job of helping their other group members with their work. I think the team aspect of this project definitely helped to motivate us during class, since we didn't want to let our other team members down. Also, to make our project even better, our group did a good job of giving good critiques to the other people in our group, so our project could be even better. Although we didn't all directly work on all parts of the project, we all had lots of input that went in to making it how it was. Also, outside of class, our group looked at other examples of advertising so we could make our project as realistic as possible. As a whole, I think our group did a very good job of using our time wisely so we could complete our project.
Strengths and Weaknesses
I have definitely learned a lot in all of the different strands this year. However, I am definitely better at some parts as compared to others. For this project, I believe my strengths were the website and video. I was fairly surprised with myself during the making of the website because I did not think I was good at web design. However, after I was done with it, I was really happy with what I had made. I probably could have improved some things, but as a whole I was very happy with it. I was also pretty pleased with what I did for video, although my group didn't end up using mine for our final project. I think I have really improved with my video editing this year, along with setting up good transitions and cuts that help the video to flow. I'm sure I will only continue to improve with both of these with hard work in the future. Like I said earlier, I was definitely not the best at some parts of the project. For example, I think I could improve my graphic design skills, and try to get more creative with it. I liked the few ideas I had for our logo, but they were all very similar, so I think I need to improve on my creativity when using graphic design. However, the main strand that I need to improve on based on this project was animation. I did not like my 3D animation at all and had I not have been working on the website, I would've definitely tried to improve it. Overall, I will definitely try to improve on these aspects later on so I can create even better projects.
Summary
As a whole, this was a very enjoyable project to work on. It was very nice having the freedom to do all of these different parts of the project on our own. I also really enjoyed working with my team throughout the quarter to create this project. There are a few things I might have tried to change if we were to do this project again, but overall I am very happy with what we created. If I were to take away one thing from this project, it would probably be the team aspect. Our group did a great job of sharing our ideas, and helping each other, so I hope I can bring that with me for the rest of my e-Comm career. If I were to set one other goal after this project, it would probably just be to continue to work hard in class so I can continue improving as a student and designer. Overall, I really enjoyed working on this project and I think it was a great way to end my first year in e-Comm.
Pre-Production For this project, we were assigned a specific movie about high school, and were told to remake the trailer. My group was assigned "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" for our movie. I was pretty excited about this project to start with because I really like the movie I got, and I thought I got a good group. However, this project was certainly not an easy task, so we had a lot of work to do. We started off with all of our pre-production activities. This included story boarding, completing a beat sheet, and figuring out who to cast for each role. Our group decided to mainly cast from our own group to make scheduling a little easier. However, we still casted all of our adults, plus two of our main characters from outside our group. Before we started filming, we also figured out what we were going to do for locations, props, and costumes. Most of our group chipped in for some props or costumes, and we mainly decided the locations as a group. Once we had all of that...
Pre-Production To start out with this project, I had to choose a picture for me to vectorize. I don't take a lot of pictures, so I didn't have a lot of pictures to choose from. I eventually decided to crop myself out of a picture with my family and use that for my vectorized portrait. Once I imported this picture, I brought it in to Adobe Photoshop. In Photoshop, I used the posterize option to clearly separate the differences in color. This allowed me to make more specific shapes that would eventually make my portrait look a little more realistic. Then I imported this updated picture into Adobe Illustrator. When I started in Illustrator, I had to make two art boards. Both of the art boards would have my original picture on it. However, one of them would have a decreased opacity, and that picture would be the one I trace over to create my vector. The other picture was simply used for reference, and to grab colors for my vector. Production When I first started this project...
Projects Typography For this project, we had to come up with quotes and then make four unique typography designs using various colors and fonts. We completed this project over the span of about 1-2 weeks. This project was difficult for me because I tend to get stuck on the same idea often, so when I came up with one design, I struggled to create other unique and interesting layouts for my type. I also struggled to find good colors to use for some of my designs. This project really helped me to learn much more about the use of type/text in designs. I learned how to make fonts stand out by using different font types such as script and serif. I also became much more comfortable with the pen tool as I had to trace certain graphics. For this project, I often asked my peers what fonts or colors they preferred so that my designs could look even better. With my original designs, most of them were very similar and did not include very many graphics. So, in order to make my designs more in...
